The new film, nominated for eight Oscars, is certainly the most historically honest of all the celluloid attempts to grapple with Vietnam and its aftermath. In its own way it is as ambitious in scope and as emotionally unsparing as Apocalypse Now. Arguably it also comes the closest yet to being the definitive Vietnam picture.
